Fernlicht (long distance light) is an experimental concept to help couples with a long distance relationship.

My Dad joined the commuter's club and would spend 3-4 days apart from his wife every week. Working long hours and having his cellphone notoriously switched off, he knew as well as anyone this would be tough on their relationship. So, my goal was to make it easy for the two of them to talk without words.
Both devices communicate with a simple PHP script to know their status. When tapped on the lid, a small light confirms the other device is illuminated and vice versa.
So if my Dad wants to tell his wife he's savely arrived at his flat, he'll tap on the lid of his green jar and on his wife's desk, the orange jar will illuminate.
